Winter Ango

December 3 - March 4 2005

Shuso Hossenshiki, March 4 16:00 hrs

Anjo Koren Kasman

Winter Ango will start on December 3 with Rohatsu sesshin. Ango is an intensive three-months training period, the format of which goes back to Shakyamuni Buddha's time. During the rainy season he and his disciples would halt their wandering mendicant life-style to live and practice together. An important element of Ango in our tradition is that one of the ordained monks is asked to take on the position of Shuso (head-monk), a rite of passage that involves fulfilling certain responsibilities in the temple and learning to officiate daily services. At Zen River, Ango is held once a year and mirrors the Summer Month-long during which a lay-practioner is given a similar position. During this Winter Ango  Anjo Koren Kasman has been appointed Shuso. The regular daily schedule will include more zazen than usual, as a late afternoon block is added. Full time as well as part time participation is possible. Special events are Rohatsu, the New Year's sesshin, a Zazenkai, a Weekend sesshin and the Winter Closing sesshin. Shuso Hossen (concluding ceremony during which the Shuso gives a talk and challenges participants in dharma-combat) is scheduled on Saturday March 4 at 16:00 hrs (Note the change of time) Everybody welcome!  Rohatsu runs December 3 - 10. It is often considered the most significant sesshin of the year, as it celebrates Buddha's enlightenment on December 8. On that day Buddhist practitioners from all over the world sit in meditation to commemorate this event. It is an interesting feature of Zen River's schedule that we start Ango with this sesshin.  New Year's sesshin is scheduled December 26 - January 1. This sesshin has become quite popular over the last few years. It is definitely an alternative way of enjoying the holidays together! An appropriate party will be organized on New Year's eve, in the Zen River style of live karaoke!

Zen River Japan tour, October 2005

Outside Soji-ji, nr. Yokohama

For 14 days, 14 members from Zen River joined an extensive tour around Japan, organised by Hojo-san. The tour began at Kirigaya-ji, Tokyo where Hojosan welcomed everyone with a wonderful party. From there the group traveled to Koshin-ji in Ottawara, the mother temple, Fuji-dera in Gotemba, sister temple to Kirigaya-ji & Zenko-ji in Yokohama. Also Keisho-in, the family temple of Koichi-san, Nicco, Soji-ji, Eihei-ji and Kyoto, and much more! So many thanks to Hojosan for his wonderful navigation and generosity towards the tour and to Koichi Isoda-san for his great help.

On September 27, Sensei, Tammy and twelve other sangha members will leave for Japan for a group - tour master-minded by Hojo-san. The group will visit places where Roshi lived and stayed, meet with other members of the Kuroda  family and close friends, and offer incense at his grave-sites. The programme includes Kirigaya-ji and Fuji-dera (Hojo-san's temples in Tokyo and Shizuoka),  Koshin-ji, (the "mother-temple" in Otowara, where the Kuroda family grew up and where the oldest brother Kuroda Kojun Roshi is now abbot), Soji-ji and Eihei-ji (the two main  monasteries of the Soto School), and many other temples in Kyoto, Kamakura, Nikko etc. A visit to Keisho-in (Koichi-san's temple in Fuji-city) is also part of the programme . Koichi-san will join for several days , and Ito-san may do so too . The group will return on O c tober 10, surely with many stories! Segaki consists of an elaborate food offering and is  dedicated to deceased relatives of Zen River members. During the ceremony  all Ihai (memorial tablets),  which are usually kept in the kaissando, are put on the altar , while a  variety of dishes are arranged on low tables around  the altar as  a symbolic offering to those who dwell in different realms and may be in need .

Family Week

The family week of August 6 through 12 was a great success. In spite of rainy weather, spirits were high.  Services turned very cheerful as all children joined in with small percussion instruments. By the end of the week they knew the Jizo Shingon dharani by heart!

While the regular daily schedule continued for the adults, special activities were organized for the kids. The attic became a complete art studio where they made large paintings based on Buddhist themes. Thursday August 11 we all went to the island of Borkum to spend a day on the beach.

August 22 through 29  will be another family week of sorts,  with Koichi Isoda-san  visiting us from Japan with his two daughters, as well as Tammy's brother Stef  and his wife Jenny from England with  their four children. They will stay through the first few days of sesshin. In general , the  month of August  seems to naturally accomodate family-oriented practice

During the ceremony  all Ihai (memorial tablets),  which are usually kept in the kaissando, will be put on the altar , while a  variety of dishes will be arranged on low tables around  the altar as  a symbolic offering to those who dwell in different realms and may be in need . After the ceremony the dishes  will be enjoyed as a party dinner. Everybody is welcome to attend and bring a favorite dish. The party will include , as usual, live music with songs by sangha members. Anyone may join in with a short performance!

Summer Sesshin

June 24 - July 21, 2005

Last minute sign-ups still OK for part three.Part four is almost full

Jorge & Sensei, July 2004

This summer month-long sesshin functions as a natural counterpart to the Winter Ango. The format is experimental, giving a lay-person the opportunity to fulfill a role comparable to that of head-monk during Ango. The first head-trainee (better terms are in the making) of Zen River will be Jorge Ryusho Lopez Doriga. The month long is divided into four 5 day sesshins, each beginning Friday evening and ending Thursday morning. Participants are welcome to join for each part or all four. The end-ceremony, complete with dharma talk and combat will be held on Wednesday July 20 at 4:00 pm, followed by a festive barbecue party. On Monday July 18 sesshin continues on the small uninhabited island of Simonszand. The day trip to Simonszand is open to everyone

(The Contribution for the Simonszand retreat is 50 euros for non sesshin participants. Full time sesshin participants may help with a modest donation to cover the sailing trip. See General Info page for further contribution details)

Part 1: Friday June 24 - Thursday June 30
Part 2: Friday July 1 - Thursday July 7
Part 3: Friday July 8 - Thursday July 14

Sitting on Simonzand,

Monday July 18 2005

Zen River's first experiment with nature retreats in the Waddensea area was such a success that it will be repeated next summer 2005 during the monthlong in July. The North Star boat  will bring participants again to Simonszand, an endless landscape of mud and water, where it then waits for the tide to go down. After a short  hour everyone can go ashore, without getting wet (almost). On our first visit, five seals formed a dignified welcome committee. Chanting and sitting in the most spacious and natural part of Holland is an incredible experience.

(Contribution for the Simonszand retreat is 50 euros for non sesshin participants. Full time sesshin participants may help with a small donation to cover the sailing trip. See General Info page for further details)

Congratulations to Peter Gakudo den Hollander. The Shuso Hossen ceremony on March 5 was impressive, with more than fifty people attending. The traditional zendo set-up, in which the shuso delivers his talk from the ryoban seat, worked very well. Also special thanks to our good old friend Isoda Koichi-san from Japan. It was wonderful to welcome him again. Koichi-san joined Tenkei Sensei for one of the dharma talks, helped us with many of the details of the ceremony and contributed greatly to the atmosphere of the party afterwards. We look forward to seeing him again with Madoka and Yuriko this August!

Butsudan

A beautiful 'butsudan', a traditional home altar that is used in Japan to honor the ancestors, was donated by one of our sangha members. It is made of black laquered wood and gold-leaf, and fits perfectly in the Kanzeon room, which in fact also functions as a Kaissando or founder's room. We will dedicate the butsudan to our spiritual ancestor Maezumi Roshi.

Winter Ango 2004

Ango at Zen River is a three-month training period, with a daily schedule of six hours of zazen, regular services, dharma-talks, daisan, study-groups and samu. Traditionally it is the most intensive programme of the year and also includes several Sesshins and a Zazenkai. Everyone is welcome to join for the whole period, for special events or for any part of the daily programme. In fact more and more people find out that the regular schedule at Zen River offers a very attractive alternative for training besides Sesshins. Living and practicing together we have the best opportunity to learn how to put practice into living!

Correction and changes in schedule

As of 2005, the scheduled dates for Practice Weekends will become either Zazenkai, a day long introduction into Zen Practice, or Weekend Sesshins.
